2011/climb11

The Climbing group was an enormous success, with multiple outings and many climbs achieved.

On the first Wednesday of the workshop, the group took a full contingent out to Casarotto. We focussed on introductory routes given the relatively novice level of most of the participants. After an initial bouldering session, the group selected Su Barraccoccu (5c) as the route to try. Several people managed to complete the route, and most of the beginners made a good go at it. Exceptional mention should be made of Borys Wrobel, who first time out made a game try at the route and managed to climb all of it but the final move. We'll be looking for you to be ready for those 7c's next year Borys! (Just joking about that)

Sunday, the free day, saw renewed activity. Members of the group managed to attempt 3 routes successfully. Although the group size was smaller (only 2 initially, later joined by a few more who attempted various boulder problems), this made it possible to move quickly and attempt some more challenging lines.

Later in the second week, Thursday and Friday saw a renewed burst of activity. On Thursday 2 climbers started out and attempted a difficult route on the main wall. One climber succeeded. Later a second group joined them. Some who had not been present on the first Wednesday attempted Su Barraccoccu, unfortunately with no success although Jan managed to rectify this the next day.

On Friday a foursome set out and attempted some more challenging lines; although only one member of the group succeeded on the two difficult routes selected that day, later most of the group was able to succeed on a somewhat easier line immediately to the right, including first-time-ascender Florian Jug. Congrats Florian, and welcome to the climbing fraternity!

So overall an exhausting and frenetic but very successful group.

Many thanks to all who contributed as "belay slaves" and "route cleaners"

Next year we might want to think a bit about coordination of gear and times; this year equipment shortages were a bit of a barrier. We should try to have at least 2 ropes, 2 belay devices, a spare harness, and at least 2 complete sets of quickdraws (about 10 per set)

The total count of routes on which at least one climber succeeded with a no-falls ascent is thus:

Homosalto (5c)

Carne Tremula (5c)

Su Barraccoccu (5c)

Sturm und Drang (6a)

Divieto di Caccia (6a)

Via della Grotta (6a+)

La Sfera (6a+/6b)

Katasucsy (6b+)

I Monelli (6b+)

West Side Story (6c)
